What is an "Organic Mattress" and why do I want one?
You've heard of organic vegetables and organic milk, but what on earth is an organic crib mattress? Is it really healthier?
Quite simply, yes. Organic vegetables are healthier because they do not have chemical pesticide residues. Organic milk is healthier because it comes from cows that are not give artificial horomones. Likewise, organic crib mattresses do not have all the chemicals that regular crib mattresses have.
But that's just the beginning. Organic crib mattresses are made with organic and non-toxic materials instead of conventional and chemically questionable materials. Parents and physicians recommend organic crib mattresses as a way to avoid unnecessary exposure to these chemicals.

What are the certification standards for an organic mattress?
Organic mattresses, like all other certified products made with organic fiber and textiles, are certified under the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). The largest U.S. GOTS approved certifier is Oregon Tilth Certified Organic (OTCO).
In particular, the GOTS standard requires that all fiber and fabrics, with limited exceptions, must be made from certified materials that made the USDA's National Organic Program (NOP) standard and are processed in accordance with GOTS. All other components, (such as innersprings, fire protection, etc.) must meet stringent non-toxic standards. Naturepedic is an OTCO certified organic processor of fiber and textiles and is certified to manufacture organic mattresses and bedding.

Are mattresses labeled "Eco" and "Green" just as good?
No. "Eco" and "Green" are not regulated terms and can be misleading. For example, "plant derived" or "soybean" foam used in many "eco" mattress models are at least 80% petroleum/chemical based and are not really "made of soybeans." "Bamboo" fabric, also common in "eco" models, is typically made using environmentally toxic chemicals with no trace of the bamboo plant in the finished product. Many of these "eco" materials may sound good, but they are not really "natural" and are certainly not focused on eliminating harsh chemicals.

So, why Naturepedic?
Simple. The health and safety of your child should not be negotiable.
Naturepedic products eliminate hazardous chemicals found in conventional mattresses while offering a more natural and non-toxic alternative for parents. In addition,  Naturepedic does not sacrifice critical features and benefits such as waterproofing and a hypoallergenic design. With so many "organic/natural/eco" options available (soybean foam, cotton batting, coconut husks, natural latex/rubber, wool, etc.), it can be difficult to differentiate among the various offerings.
Naturepedic was founded by a quarter century environmental engineer familiar with hazardous chemicals. Through an in-depth research, Naturepedic has identified and selected the most natural and non-toxic materials that make sense on a practical level. All Naturepedic products follow these principles and priorities:

Priority #1: No harmful chemicals
Priority #2: No allergenic materials
Priority #3: Natural, organic, and renewable materials wherever possible.
Priority #4: Practical design (easy to clean, waterproof cover, etc.)
Priority #5: Third party independent testing and verification

Naturepedic backs up its product development with scientific data. In particular, Naturepedic products are regularly tested for chemical emissions and are certified by GREENGUARD to meet their strict standards for children.
Naturepedic understands the harm that can come from toxic materials and allergenic materials, and is dedicated to the continual development of innovative high quality products that eliminate these risks. Naturepedic carries the most awards and endorsements of any other children's mattress company, as well as the best warranty in the industry.

What's in a Naturepedic Mattress?

Certified Organic Cotton
Organic cotton is the purest form of cotton, grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers or GMO's (genetically modified organisms). In mattresses, organic cotton is a healthier alternative to foams (which are chemically treated) and latex (which is allergy-prone). Naturepedic uses only U.S. grown and certified organic cotton.

Food Grade Polyethylene
(Waterproof models only)
The surface of every waterproof Naturepedic mattress is so pure you can eat on it. Polyethylene is an environmentally friendly plastic that is used throughout the food packaging industry for its purity and non-toxic properties. It has a very simple molecular structure that does not require chemical additives (as opposed to vinyl/PVC) and is favored by environmental groups all over the world. Naturepedic uses only polyethylene specially formulated to meet food contact standards, creating the finest non-toxic waterproof mattress surface available. Polyethylene is easy-to-clean and highly stain resistant while providing an excellent barrier to dust mites and other allergens. Does not contain any fire retardant chemicals or phthalates.

Steel Innerspring
Naturepedic uses only the highest quality innersprings available. Steel springs are readily recyclable and provides heavy duty support without any health or allergy concerns. Our flagship crib innerspring features 252 coils at 15.5 gauge with 9 gauge border wire. Our 150 coil innerspring features 13 gauge coils with 9 gauge border wire. Note: Beware of advertisements for “coil count.” This figure does not give the number of coils in the actual mattress, but rather the number of coils in an equivalent full size mattress

Wavesupport Lightweight Technology
Wavesupport is an exclusive Naturepedic innovation designed to provide exceptional support with about half the weight of an innerspring mattress. Wavesupport is made from pure grade polyethylene and makes changing sheets a breeze! Unlike most lightweight mattresses on the market, Wavesupport contains no polyurethane foam. Wavesupport also does not contain any fire retardant chemicals.

Fire Protection-Done the Right Way
Nearly all mattresses today are made with polyurethane foam or latex as the primary filling material. Due to their high flammability, these materials are usually treated or wrapped with industrial fire retardant chemicals. Some of these chemicals introduce health and toxicity concerns. In fact, most manufacturers don't even disclose their fire retardant ingredients.
At Naturepedic, we take a different approach. Organic cotton is a far superior filling material and is significantly less flammable to begin with, allowing for more creative solutions. Our exclusive fire protection system is based on the unique fire retardant properties of baking soda and hydrated silica permanently bonded to cellulose. This results in an inherently flame resistant barrier that does not break down. The cellulose fiber used is derived primarily from eucalyptus and poplar trees and has a low carbon footprint. The materials provide the best way to meet fire regulations without the use of questionable chemicals or allergenic wool.

What's NOT in a Naturepedic Mattress?

Naturepedic avoids the use of materials with well known allergenic properties for all its baby and children's products. In particular:

Natural Latex / Rubber or Coir
At first glance natural latex/rubber may seem to be an excellent material for use in baby and children's mattresses. However, natural latex/rubber has been associated with unusually high allergies, particularly in children. Most allergists recommend that babies and young children steer clear of latex. According to the FDA, a product containing latex (and particularly natural latex) can be labeled as "hypoallergenic." Coir (or coconut husks) also contains latex as a bonding agent. Additionally, hospitals across the country are in the process of removing latex due to this concern.

Wool, Mohair or Horsetail Hair
Wool is a natural fire retardant material used in many organic mattresses. Wool has been long associated with allergies, particularly in children. For example, wool intrisically contains lanolin and certain alcohols known to have allergenic properties. Other allergens originate not with the wool itself, but with the chemical treatments applied (in order to clean it from dirt, sand, grease and dried sweat). A precautionary approach should be taken since babies are potentially susceptible to high allergy materials.

Naturepedic follows the precautionary principle and eliminates questionable chemicals in the first place. Naturepedic also avoids the use of certain conventional mattress materials such as PVC/vinyl and polyurethane foam in favor of materials such as food-grade polyethylene and organic cotton. In addition, Naturepedic eliminates perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs), questionable fire retardant chemicals, and antibacterial biocides.
